How to pass the Ohio knowledge test

  1. Read the handbook. Every question comes from the official Ohio manuals; the handbook page links to the agency's own copies.
  2. Practice test by test. Each numbered test mixes Ohio law with the national road rules, like the real exam.
  3. Read every explanation. Especially for answers you got right by guessing.
  4. Simulate the real exam on the category page when you pass the tests comfortably.

Ohio written test format

Test Questions Pass mark Minimum age
Car 40 30 correct (10 mistakes allowed) 15 years 6 months
Motorcycle 40 30 correct (10 mistakes allowed) 15 years 6 months
CDL 50 40 correct (10 mistakes allowed) 18 years

Car. The Ohio Driver Manual states the knowledge test is 40 multiple-choice questions with a 75 percent passing rate, which is 30 correct answers. Age 15 years and 6 months is the minimum age for the vision screening and knowledge test that lead to a Temporary Instruction Permit Identification Card (TIPIC).

Motorcycle. The Ohio Motorcycle Operator Manual states the motorcycle knowledge test is 40 multiple-choice questions and that at least 75 percent must be answered correctly. The minimum age shown is the general TIPIC testing age and is listed as unconfirmed for the motorcycle credential specifically. Online motorcycle knowledge testing requires age 18 and an active Ohio Class D license or CDL.

CDL. The Ohio Commercial Driver License Manual does not publish the item count or the pass mark for the general knowledge test, and the Ohio BMV web pages could not be retrieved. The count, pass mark and minimum age shown here follow the common federal 80 percent standard and are listed as unconfirmed.
